Note to potential students: I am currently looking for PhD students to work on a number of physical layer topics, including
  • Cognitive Radio (Physical Layer/Information Theoretic) - interference alignment and mitigation, performance analysis
  • Multi-user Multi-cell MIMO - beamforming, codebook design for limited feedback...

Interested persons should contact me with a CV and a brief description of their research background.

Please see http://ecs.victoria.ac.nz/Groups/CSP/StudentInformation for information on the application process.

Research Projects

For other related projects in the communications area, see Communications and Signal Processing Research group.

I am currently involved in a number of research projects, mainly within the physical layer of wireless communications. Broadly speaking, these include
  • Cognitive Radio
  • Limited Feedback Beamforming
  • Channel estimation and prediction

Interference in Cognitive Radio

in collaboration with Mansoor Shafi (Telecom NZ) and Peter Smith (University of Canterbury)

We are investigating the total interference encountered by a Primary (licensed) User (PU) due to the presence of Secondary (Cognitive) Users (CRs). This includes
  • statistical characterization of the aggregate interferences due to CRs
  • interference mitigation strategies

Symbol timing synchronisation in OSTBC receivers

in collaboration with Prof. Peter J. McLane at Queen's University, Kingston.

We have developed symbol timing error detectors (TEDs) for orthogonal space time code (OSTBC) receivers. These low complexity algorithms are suitable for timing error tracking applications.Currently the focus is on extension to Quasi OSTBC systems.
